Jamie Carbetta Hammond

Pony Box Dance Theatre’ s founder Jamie Carbetta Hammond knows firsthand that dance saves lives and that all people NEED the joy, vitality, beauty and power of the performing and visual arts. Jamie had a difficult childhood and dance provided a much needed way of transcending her circumstances. Though she was not able to study dance formally until college, Jamie made dances and learned as much as she could from books and films, performing in musicals. At the age of 17, she landed her first gig as a paid dancer in a musical and went on to perform in twelve other musicals. She also began teaching dance at the age of 17 and has since taught dance to students ages 3 to 83, in Japan and South Central Los Angeles presently teaching in the colleges. Jamie’s vision is to improve and change lives through exposure to world class contemporary dance performances and through professional dance instruction. One of her students, Elijah, was able to escape his life in South Central Los Angeles, becoming a finalist on” So You Think You Can Dance” and is currently dancing with Jennifer Mueller/The Works in NYC.  Jamie has now been teaching dance for over 30 years and has worked with hundreds of students in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Jamie Carbetta Hammond began making dances for the neighborhood children at the age of 5 to her dad’s Shirley Bassey records, gradually morphed into a light theatre ingénue before earning her MFA in dance at University of California, Irvine in 2000. As a dancer she performed nationally and internationally, touring the US and Japan.   Jamie has had the honor of receiving numerous grants, from the National Museum of Dance, Arts Council for Long Beach, California Arts Council, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles, Center for Cultural Innovation, the Annenberg Foundation and University of California, Irvine. Her work has been performed in Japan, Ohio, New York, Washington and California.   In 2012, Jamie founded Pony Box Dance Theatre, a contemporary, all male dance company integrating visual art, theater and original scores committed to bringing the joy of dance to everyone. PBDT placed as a finalist in 2016 McCallum Theater’s Choreography Festival.
