Our story

The inspiration for the name “Pony Box” came from a drawing by Jaime’s daughter. When asked what the drawing was, Tatiana explained, “It’s a pony box, you put everything in it, even your dreams.”

Company

Founded in 2012, Pony Box Dance Theatre is a bicoastal arts nonprofit whose mission is to share the joy and healing power of dance with everyone.

The organization has two main aspects: a professional contemporary dance company comprised of all male-identifying artists, and community educational programs.

Jaime drew inspiration from the constrained choreographic range offered to male-identifying dancers and the pioneering dance work of Ted Shawn when creating PBDT.  We promote the work of cutting edge choreographers: Rena Butler, Jaime Carabetta,  Norbert de la Cruz, Omar Roman de Jesus and Yoshito Sakuraba.

Beyond the pursuit of artistic excellence, PBDT also has a strong commitment to community outreach in underserved areas of LA and NYC.

The organization has created two flagship programs over the past decade:
Best Foot Forward and “Dance for Life." Currently, we have programs at juvenile facilities, homeless shelters, group homes, hospitals , LGBQT + and community centers.

In addition, PBDT offers a variety of community engagement including masterclasses, workshops, family dance, senior dance, artist talks, and lecture demonstrations.

PBDT celebrated our 10th Anniversary in 2023. Our journey thus far is a testament to the transformative power of dance as an art form. We cannot wait to grow our communities and  continue transforming lives through dance.

mission

At Pony Box Dance Theatre, our mission is two-fold:
1. To uplift under resourced communities in NYC and LA County through the art of dance
2. To push forward the boundaries of artistry for male identifying dancers

To improve and change lives through exposure to world class contemporary dance performances and through professional dance instruction
